Calligraphy

How to hire a Calligrapher?

Are you looking to hire a calligrapher?

Whether it’s for invitations, signage, or custom artwork, understanding the process can make your experience smooth and enjoyable. As a freelance calligrapher just starting out in 2026, I’m doing a lot of research how to create the clearest and most professional workflow for clients.

Step 1: Define Your Project

Before you hire a calligrapher, clarify what you need. Are you creating wedding invitations, event signage, or a personal art piece? Being specific helps the calligrapher understand your vision and provide accurate guidance. Many Calligraphers begin (like me) in primarily scribing wedding invitations, placecards, and envelope addressing, while they hone their craft.

Step 2: Communication is Key

Once your project is defined, open a clear line of communication with a Calligrapher whose style you like. Instagram is a great place for searching for “Freelance Calligraphers” or “Calligrapher for hire”. Here are some of my favourites:

Once you have found someone you like, discuss style preferences, deadlines, and budget. This ensures expectations are aligned and avoids confusion. For clients, this is a chance to ask questions and feel confident in the process. I guide every project from idea to finished piece. My goal is to make commissioning calligraphy simple, collaborative, and enjoyable, so you can focus on your event or project while I take care of the lettering.

Step 3: Request a Quote

After discussing details, most calligraphers will provide you with “a quote”. I aim to make mine simple and transparent, showing clients exactly what to expect. A 50% deposit will secure the booking.

Step 4: Design and Proofing

During the design phase, many projects will include a sample. This is an opportunity to confirm style, layout, and details. Feedback is important—collaboration here ensures the final piece matches your vision.

Step 5: Payment and Delivery

The remaining 50% becomes payable upon completion (before return postage).

My Approach as a New Freelance Calligrapher

I plan to update this page as I refine my own process for clients. My goal is to make hiring a calligrapher easy, clear, and enjoyable, with open communication, thoughtful planning, and collaborative design.
